“Sustainable Development Initiatives – DVI” has strong interests in the areas of sustainable development, environment protection, social inclusion and rural development. The main goal of DVI within those areas is to promote knowledge, awareness and capacity of interest groups, local government, business and society while assisting them in development of local, national and international partnerships and collaboration for a more sustained future and well-being.
DVI was launched in 2007. It has been established as a successor of the United Nations Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) that has been active in Lithuania for 8 years since 2001 and now phases out after Lithuania has entered the EU. The GEF SGP supports sustainable development actions of NGOs and communities in the areas of climate change, biodiversity, international waters and land degradation, and operates in 124 countries. During programme operation in Lithuania, SGP staff, which currently is DVI staff, has assisted in development and implementation of 104 projects totaling to USD 9.8 million.
DVI has inherited mission, experiences, knowledge, global and national partnerships and institutional relations as well as human and material resources of this unique global corporate programme. DVI remains associated with the global GEF SGP as an affiliated member of the global partnership further ensuring continuation and spread of this programme impacts.
Currently DVI has a small core of staff and a large network of partners globally and in the country. Due to long work experience within the UN system, DVI staff maintains world-wide contacts in many countries with other GEF SGP country programmes, UN agencies, international experts’ pool and variety of NGOs. In Lithuania we favour established relations with numerous national and local government institutions, academia, NGOs, associations, and local communities.
We are well knowledgeable and experienced about global sustainable development and environmental issues and policies. DVI staff members have M.Sc. level diplomas of the Central European University that are accredited by the Manchester University, UK, and numerous training certificates, including Ph.D. studies. Prior to GEF SGP, DVI staff members were extensively involved in 25 national and international environment area projects development and direct implementation financed by INTERREG, FAO, EKHF, OSI, USDA, PHARE, Leonardo da Vinci, and other EC programmes.
